The Headmasters

The origins of the school started in 1902, with the first headmaster Archibald J. Menzies taking the helm for some 30 years. At this point it was a municipal secondary school. He was succeeded by  Dr W. V Lloyd who lasted 5 years. P.W Butler became head in 1937, and in 1939 the school changed its name to West Bromwich Grammar School.

Fourteen years later, the new head S. A Wood would herald a new era in the school officially becoming Menzies High school in 1969. He would serve a further four years before Michael Harrison became head in 1973.

He would be succeeded by Ian Peddar in 1983, who would be the head teacher for  fourteen years to 1997.

From Sandwell Evening Mail 25th March 1983

These first six head teachers would have their names immortalised on the wooden chair in front of the organ in  A block. Undoubtedly, they were the most successful leaders of the school during its heyday.

Memories of Michael Harrison and Ian Peddar are printed below when they contributed to the 100 year reunion anniversary of the school origin in 2002. This event was organised by The Old Throstles Association. It gives a personable recollection and insight into teachers we perhaps only knew as being aloof and distant. They did appear to genuinely care about the pupils and success of the school and its heritage.
