Breaktime patterns

Fifteen minutes to spend with your friends,

a study into adolescent trends,

scurrying pupils, East, West, North and South,

reading messages in the Menzies Mouth,

crunching, munching potato and chocolate meals,

Jack the lads doing contraband deals,

joking asides mixed with deafening shouts,

legendary school games with balls or without

“tracking”, “bulldog”, “cuppies” and “dodge”,

or loitering under the A block lodge,

Litter collecting under leafless ashes,

unsanctioned fights to which everyone dashes,

teachers and time the gatherings quell,

patterns dispersing with the ring of a bell.
