Originally beginning life as the replacement for The West Bromwich Grammar school, the Clarkes Lane site opened in 1964 and in 1970 it became a comprehensive school with the new name in honour of the first head teacher of the former school\u00a0<strong>Archibald Menzies.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180420.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7\" src=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180420-300x220.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180420-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180420-768x563.png 768w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180420-1024x751.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">The site comprised thirteen individual blocks, labelled A- the administration centre to M \u2013 the former Hill Top High School Annex. Each block had its own unique identity having different subjects taught in each, and thoughtful planning also interspersed large amounts of green space amongst the concrete fabric of the mundane 60\u2019s facades. The school site was the setting of the first 20 minutes of the John Cleese 1986 comedy <a href=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/?page_id=122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clockwise<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Through a series of unfortunate events, the school\u2019s demise sadly occurred rapidly and perhaps inevitably and it was replaced in name by \u201cthe phoenix collegiate\u201d in<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a02010, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the old blocks being demolished one by one out of sight to make way for a new single blotting metamorphosis. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">This website aims to shine a light on things that some would have considered lost and restore the Menzies phoenix. It is about a time and place rather than just people. I believe it is possible to recreate that which was lost by combinations of pictures, words and music, revisiting and projecting these old buildings and the events that took place in them for immortality.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47\" src=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy-768x549.png 768w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy-1024x732.png 1024w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Scan_20180407-4-Copy.png 1117w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Let me be your guide and take a look around, click on and view the pictures, study the words and listen to the individual characteristics of each block portrayed through the music and explore and reconnect with these places through conscious thought.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PICT0012.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-345\" src=\"http:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PICT0012-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PICT0012-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PICT0012-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/themenziesphoenix.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PICT0012-1024x704.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif;\">Close your eyes, and imagine walking through the doors of each block with renewed eyes, relive the sights, sounds, smells, touch, and taste and picture the teachers and pupils that made them living centres of learning.
